Marquesas Islands

The Marquesas, or Henua Enata meaning "Land of Men", are seemingly lost at the end
of the earth.

Even now, some of the islands are virtually untouched since the era of European exploration. The isolation of the Marquesas from other lands has created an immense pride among the people and a fascinating culture. The language is unique to Tahiti, as the lilting Marquesan dialect is traced directly to the ancient Polynesian tongue of Maohi.

Natural wonders abound as 1000-foot waterfalls cascade down sheer volcanic cliffs, and towering mountains disappear mysteriously in the clouds.
The largest island in the Marquesas, Nuka Hiva is known for towering spire-like peaks; secluded, lush valleys; ancient religious sites; fjord-like bays; and waterfalls so high that most of the falling water evaporates as it descends.

Hiva Oa, the majestic and historic island is known for its wild, untamed landscape, giant stone tiki and endless vistas, is the final resting place of poet Jacques Brel and artist Paul Gauguin.

Dive sites around Nuku Hiva are as unique as the island itself. The plankton-rich waters attract unique species such as melon-headed whales and scalloped hammerheads along with other large animals such as manta rays. Nuku Hiva is also known for dramatic cave and cliff dives. Other species commonly found include sting rays, tuna, parrotfish, triggerfish, scorpionfish, snappers, and whitetip reef sharks.

Air Tahiti provides daily service to Nuku Hiva with a 3-1/2 hour flight from Papeete. Weekly service is also offered to Nuku Hiva from Bora Bora and Rangiroa. Continuing flights and helicopter charters connect Nuku Hiva to Hiva Oa with several weekly 35-minute flights.

The Aranui 3, and several inter-island vessels offer service between the primary islands.

Depending on road conditions and the location of your hotel, your airport transfer could either be a 2 hour transfer by 4x4 vehicle or by helicopter from Héli inter Marquises.

Travel around the islands requires pre-planning. Although 4x4 rental vehicles are available, it is advisable to hire a guide to negotiate the steep, rugged, and unfamiliar roads occasionally used by herds of wild horses. Around the islands, motorboat rentals for half or full days offer an enjoyable way to explore the dramatic bays and shoreline.
