OVERVIEW
Mozambique has 1,535 miles of coast stretching from South Africa to Tanzania. Mozambique declared it´s independence from Portugal on June 25th, 1974. The country has been torn with civil war since that time until 1992. Eight years later and the infrastructure of the country is starting to make headway, but is years away from it´s neighboring country of South Africa. Their November 2004 elections came and went with no mishaps. Due to the war there has not been any commercial fishing in Mozambique for many, many years. This becomes obvious when you see the size and abundance of fish.
DIVING
Most of the diving is shore based where you ride out to the reefs in "rubber ducks" (Zodiacs or RIB`s). All dives are drift dives lead by a local DM who knows the reefs and where to find the things. After the dive you return to shore for the surface interval time before doing the second dive. Two dives a day is the norm and if the wind does not get up to much by midday you might just be able to squeeze in a third dive. Moz is not a 5 or 6 dive a day destination. The wind normally drops at 17h00 so night dives are frequently done and it`s a unique way of diving and has to be experienced. Quite unlike a night dive anywhere else in the world.
There are a few yachts that operate out of the Bazaruto Archipelago and from Pemba servicing the Quirimbas that offer live-aboard diving. These are usually 8 berth catamarans that go out for 7 days.

The diving is limited to two or 3 dives a day which are done one hour before high/low tide to one hour after high/low tide. This is due to the depth of the reefs and the 3 meter difference between high water and low water which result is 4 to 5 knot currents in between high and low tide. Not pleasant diving! Due to the remoteness of the resorts and the distance from civilization medical attention is limited to the basic first aid knowledge of the local DM with a result "pushing the limits", multiple deep dives and technical dives are not allowed.
