Zimbabwe is a land-locked country that straddles the Tropic of Capricorn, in central southern Africa. It is over 390,000 square kilometers, about the same size as California. The official language is English, although many local languages are spoken. The country is blessed with fertile soils, mineral wealth and wonderful scenery. Two major rivers form its northern and southern boundaries. The great Zambezi River cuts along its northern frontier to form the border with Zambia, while the more languid Limpopo forms the southern border with South Africa. Geography The northern regions of Zimbabwe are the prime safari area. The Zambezi is a mighty river with an exceptional variety of wonderful scenery and activities, coupled with superb national parks that harbor immense herds and great game viewing as well as one of the world`s natural wonders, the Victoria Falls. The national parks along the Zambezi are legendary. Mana Pools and Matusadona are located on the low-lying floodplains of Africa`s Great Rift Valley and offer extraordinary game viewing and remarkable scenery. The mountains of the Rift Valley form a picturesque backdrop. Along the Botswana border, the easternmost tongues of the Kalahari sands creep into the country and mix with the teak forests of the interior. Desert adapted animals live in the same area as moist woodland species. This is Hwange National Park and home to some of Southern Africa`s last great elephant, buffalo and sable herds. Season The Linkwasha and Makalolo concession within Hwange is a truly wild area where animals migrate as they wish. There are very few areas anywhere else where one can see gemsbok, sable and roan naturally. This area also has Zimbabwe`s best summer game viewing. Zimbabwe`s rainy season is from November to March. Attractions Zimbabwe is a beautiful country with a temperate climate over its highland plateau. The great Zambezi River cuts along its northern frontier to form the border with Zambia, while the languid Limpopo River forms the southern border with South Africa. Both rivers flow in tropical low lying valleys where wildlife is abundant. The Victoria Falls is probably the greatest scenic attraction for visitors and being surrounded by national parks, is equally interesting for nature enthusiasts. The eastern highlands create a physical barrier with Mozambique and provide stunning mountain habitats. The largest wildlife sanctuary is Hwange National Park, situated on the western border with Botswana. The Zambezi Valley national parks along Lake Kariba offer a variety of traditional and active game viewing opportunities. |
